kW vs kWh: choosing power and battery capacity

Two units, two different questions: how much can run, and for how long?

Power is how much at once

Inverter power, measured in kilowatts (kW), helps determine which electrical loads can operate simultaneously. Check continuous demand and appliance start-up requirements.

Capacity is stored energy

Battery energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), helps determine operating duration. As a simple ideal example, 10 kWh divided by a constant 1 kW load equals 10 hours. Real runtime is lower or different because usable capacity, conversion losses, settings and changing loads matter.

Choose around your household

List the appliances that must run together and decide how long essential loads need support. Confirm phase, backup circuit design and equipment compatibility. More battery capacity does not automatically increase inverter output power.
